Matakiki
Happy Matariki
Matariki, the Māori New Year, is a time of remembrance, celebration, and planning. Symbolized by the appearance of the Pleiades star cluster in the midwinter sky, it represents the cycle of life, honoring those who have passed , giving thanks for the present , and setting intentions for the future
The Matariki cluster is made up of nine visible stars, each holding its own specific symbolism and connection to the environment:
- Matariki: The mother of the stars, signifying reflection, health, and wellbeing
- Pōhutukawa: Dedicated to remembering and honoring loved ones who have passed away
- Tupuānuku: Associated with food and plants harvested from the earth
- Tupuārangi: Connected to food that comes from the sky, such as birds and berries
- Waitī: Tied to fresh water and the life it sustains
- Waitā: Linked to the ocean and the seafood within it
- Waipunarangi: Associated with rain and the water cycle
- Ururangi: Connected to the winds and the atmosphere
- Hiwa-i-te-rangi: The star to which people direct their wishes and aspirations for the coming
